Start with your hair and your day

A hair dryer is a small fan with a heater in front of it. It blows warm air to dry wet hair faster, and with a nozzle it can also shape a style. In winter it saves you from going out with wet hair on a cold morning, and in the monsoon it helps when hair won't dry on its own.

How long and thick your hair is, and how you style it, decides the dryer you need.

Your hair and use Look for Why
Short or medium hair, quick drying 1000 to 1200 watts, 2 heat settings Light, quiet, easy to pack for travel
Long or thick hair 1600 to 2000 watts, cool shot More air, so it dries in less time
Curls, volume, salon-style blow-dry 2000 watts, diffuser and concentrator nozzle More control over where the air goes

What to look for

  • Watts. More watts move more warm air, so long hair dries faster. 1000 to 1200 watts suits short hair and travel. 2000 watts suits long or thick hair.
  • Heat and speed settings. Two heat settings is the basic level. Three heat and two speed settings give finer control, which helps if more than one person uses the dryer.
  • Cool shot. A button for a burst of cool air to set the style and protect fine hair.
  • Nozzles. A concentrator nozzle points the air for smooth styling. A diffuser spreads the air for curls and waves.
  • AC or DC motor. Most bigger salon-style dryers use an AC motor, which is stronger and lasts longer but is heavier. Most light home dryers use a DC motor.
  • Overheat protection. It switches the heater off if the dryer gets too hot, for example if the air inlet is blocked.
  • Plug and cord. Check whether the plug is 6 amp or 16 amp, and whether the cord reaches the mirror from your socket.
  • Weight and fold. A folding handle and a light body matter if you travel.

Running cost

A hair dryer runs for a few minutes a day. At an example rate of ₹8 per unit:

Dryer 10 minutes a day A month
1000 watts about 0.17 units, ₹1.30 about ₹40
1200 watts about 0.2 units, ₹1.60 about ₹48
2000 watts about 0.33 units, ₹2.70 about ₹80

A stronger dryer often finishes sooner, so the real gap is smaller than the table shows. Towel-drying your hair well first is the easiest way to cut drying time.

Safety and care

  • Never use a dryer near a filled bucket, tub or wet floor.
  • Use the plug type the dryer came with. Don't force a 16 amp plug into a smaller socket.
  • Keep the air inlet at the back clear of hair and dust, and clean it every few weeks.
  • Let the dryer cool before you fold it or wrap the cord.
  • Don't wrap the cord tightly around the handle, as it can break the wires over time.
  • Switch it off and unplug it if it smells of burning or stops blowing air.

Before you buy

Think about your hair and where you will use the dryer. For short hair or travel, a 1000 to 1200 watt folding dryer is enough. For long or thick hair, a 2000 watt dryer with a cool shot saves time, but check that you have a 16 amp socket near the mirror. Check the warranty and what is in the box on the listing.

How we made this list

We read the Amazon listings, compared the details and noted what they leave out. We have not tested these products, and brands do not pay to be listed.

Common questions

Is a 1000 watt hair dryer enough?

For short and medium hair, yes. It is light, quiet and easy to carry when you travel. Long or very thick hair dries faster with 1600 to 2000 watts, because the extra power moves more warm air.

What is the cool shot button for?

It blows cool air for a few seconds. Warm air shapes the hair and cool air sets the shape, so a blast of cool air at the end helps a style hold. It is also kinder to fine or damaged hair.

Can I use a 2000 watt dryer in a normal socket?

Many 2000 watt dryers come with a 16 amp plug, which only fits the big 16 amp socket used for geysers and ACs. Don't force it into a 6 amp socket with an adaptor. Check the plug type on the listing and the sockets in your bedroom or bathroom.

Does a hair dryer damage hair?

Very hot air held close to the hair for a long time can dry it out. Keep the dryer about a hand's width away, keep it moving, use the warm or cool setting when you can, and stop when the hair is nearly dry.
